The purchase of a “fixer-upper” home can be either be a catastrophe or the greatest investment you’ve ever made. It all depends on how well you do your homework and then negotiate the deal. Here are just a few of the most important things to watch out for when buying one:
Good Location– The old adage about location is just as relevant with a dilapidated property. There is simply no point in rehabilitating a property for which there is no demand.
Floor Plan – Similarly, a fixer-upper is no bargain if the previous owner turned it into a mish-mash of rooms that do not meet the needs of potential buyers.
Configuration – Three bedrooms are better than two and two full baths are a lot better than one and half. Always keep these two particular considerations at the forefront of your mind.
Fair Condition – Foundation, roof and appliances – these are the three killers. Make sure you fully investigate each one before investing.
